But, at times the HR also does not do its homework; it just hurries through the selection procedure and thinks that its KRA is achieved. However, it should not be like that, instead the focus should be on the quality of hiring and not the bulk. Going a step further, it is important that line managers too are given training for hiring because they need to realise that hiring is not about having a gut feel, it is a proper process, which is significant. For example, during times when an employee is leaving and has served his or her notice period, the HR is in a hurry to recruit the replacement. It is possible that it hires a person before doing a proper reference check and later realises that this particular recruit is a misfit for the organisation.

Q. What as per you are the most important aspects of hiring?

A. I think reference check and verification at the time of hiring is important. How well a candidate is dressed or how conversant he or she is should be of minor importance while hiring. Instead the focus should be on areas such as the reason for the job change or any problem faced in the other company by the employee — areas which we tend to ignore.

The only thing that needs to be seen and given time while hiring is whether the candidate has established communication skills and for that HR can have a panel discussion or interviews, psychometric sessions or group discussions. One of the important things is how you can have qualitative hiring both in terms of technical as well as leadership competencies. I think these are the important things that the HR tends to ignore just so that it completes its KRA.
