SHOURYA CHAKRAVARTY SR. VP & HEAD-HR, APTECH LTD.
At the core of recruitment
Shourya Chakravarty (Sr. VP & Head-HR, Aptech Ltd.) discusses how changing industry dynamics have become a recruitment challenge
Issue Date - 01/03/2013

HR professionals are facing challenges in the area of recruitment and selection as the job market has undergone drastic changes in terms of available talent pool, sources of recruitment, and market dynamics.

Though HR is considered as a strategic partner, there is no direct link between recruitment and revenue. Recruitment is always considered as a cost centre, hence the recruiters are not motivated enough. Often, organisations land up hiring not-so-competent candidates because they do not have a will to offer competitive salaries. This may save costs initially, but these organisations end up paying more on training and replacement.

Lack of ownership towards recruitment by line managers may lead to losing the candidate to its competitors. In most cases, selection process also depends on personal likes and dislikes of interviewers, which leads to biased recruitment. At times, team dynamics (relationship of recruiter with the line manager) affects this process.

Over a period of time, there has been a drift in candidate’s expectation. Candidates now look for compatibility between the organisation’s core values and their own value system. The expectation from the organisation and seniors is not only the salary, but knowledge and other value adds.

Changing industry dynamics have perpetuated challenges for the recruiters. Firstly, high attrition has had a negative impact on organisation’s employer brand. Secondly, today’s talent is looking for a competitive salary with a lot of flexibility in the package depending on the stage any person is currently at. Lastly, professional courses offered by various B-schools do not offer specialisations in recruitment. It is a specialised area and needs competent professionals who not only deliver numbers, but are able to understand the psyche of candidates.

With a constantly changing environment one will realise that there are a lot more challenges one will have to face in the future. The only way to mitigate these challenges is to realise the real problem and take appropriate actions. Also, to realise that change is the only constant one must always be prepared to try new methods that can enable the selection of the most suitable talent for your organisation.
