Hiring in new age
Rituparna Chakraborty (Vice-President, Indian Staffing Federation & Senior Vice-President, Teamlease Services Pvt. Ltd.) on new age hiring process

Hiring right is one of the most crucial aspects of running a successful business. Whether it is recruiting a front office person, a dental nurse or a design engineer; to attract the best talent, HR has to lay down a professional process. This involves writing an advertisement, filtering resumes, shortlisting candidates, putting together an interview process, making an offer, and formulating a full training programme for the new employee.

Although, the entire process can be outsourced today, the role of HR manager has not diminished. Before recruiting for a new position, it is important to invest some time in studying the nature of the job and conducting a job analysis of that role. The analysis helps to form the basis for a new or modified job description and person specification.

For an effective recruitment, it is important for line managers to write good job description to help HR professionals in shortlisting the correct candidate for interview. However, while line managers knows what he wants from a candidate, he may not always have the ability to put it down on paper. Hence, HR needs to coordinate with line managers to bring out a job description. While public sector organisations still follow this procedure, many of the new industries have given up on this practice.

The selection process nowadays involves use of scientific tools for psychometric testing and personality assessment. A range of psychological testing and competency matching software options are now readily available. They automatically filter out candidates that do not fit in the culture or the demands of the job role. After these tests help HR shortlist candidates, the interview panel assesses the candidate’s capability.

The most vicious problem is the mushrooming of ‘fake’ resumes. For years, India used to be an employer-dominated market. In the last two decades, it has become an employee-dominated market. That is why, apart from references, competency tests in domain knowledge are used in the selection process.
