TINA VAS VICE-PRESIDENT – GLOBAL HR, COLLABERA OVER TO ‘SOCIAL’ HIRING Tina Vas (Vice-PRESIDENT – Global HR, Collabera) says explosion of Social media is influencing recruitment trends tremendously Issue Date - 01/03/2013 |
Q. What are the mistakes you have observed in the recruitment process that the IT sector generally commits?
A. One common mistake is the lack of clear hiring focus. Often, hiring tends to be viewed as a short-term exercise. Candidates are hired with a narrow approach, keeping in mind just one specific skill set rather than focusing on more important aspects like programming and architectural concepts. Aspects like whether the candidate will be a natural fit in the company culture are often overlooked. It happens primarily because of our hyper-competitive landscape, crazy timelines and limited talent pool.
Q. Discuss some of the best recruitment practices you have experienced in the IT industry.
A. In our industry, since hiring happens in large numbers, organisations need to have a meticulous interviewing process in place. The key ingredients of a planned hiring approach are level based interviewers where the line of questioning graduates from preliminary to the more complex level. Each interviewer has a specific screening criteria. Once the ideal candidate has been indentified, it is important to positively etch the organisation’s name in the candidate’s mind.
Q. How can a biased approach be avoided? A. In this global age, against the backdrop of our rapidly dynamic IT services milieu, the hiring process is governed by recruiting practices matching international standards. Questions on age, religion are a strict no-no. It is only fair that all shortlisted candidates are provided an equal footing. One way to ensure that is by means of adequate training and education for the recruiters and hiring managers. Q. Discuss the future of selection and recruitment trends in IT. A. Companies are now adopting sophisticated online assessments to assess a candidate’s technical and behavioural skills. Social media is influencing industry trends tremendously, with LinkedIn and Facebook emerging as important recruitment engines. Employee referrals have also become one of the most preferred means of recruiting candidates. Q. How important are the values and ethics of a candidate when it comes to recruitment? A. It is important to pick those candidates who fit in the organisation’s culture. The greater the cultural fit, higher are the chances of excellence at work. |
