SHIANA MAKHIJA CHIEF HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICER – RELIANCE MEDIAWORKS
Scarce in the wide world
Shiana Makhija (Chief Human Resources Officer – Reliance MediaWorks) says even reputed organisations find it challenging to hire people who fit in the culture
Issue Date - 01/03/2013

Q. How complex is recruitment and selection for organisation that has presence across the sectors?

A. The recruitment and selection process remains same across sectors with organisations using staffing solutions, on-line portals, social platforms, walk-ins, employee referrals, and internal job postings for lateral hiring. However, what is complex is to find the right kind of talent with requisite DNA, and functional/behavioural competencies. Though generalist functions are easy to find, the funnel starts getting narrow when it comes to specialist functions.

Q. Your thoughts on today’s recruitment trend? A. One of the most complex factors affecting today’s recruitment trend is not being able to source the right talent with the desired functional/behavioural competencies due to scarcity of talent.

Q. Job hopping is due to lack of career growth opportunities by organisations. Do you agree?

A. Yes, but it depends on how we define career growth. For some it could be the job profile, or the span of control they command, while for some it could purely be about compensation. The other important hygiene factors include recognition, organisational culture etc.

Q. How important is training HR in understanding the psychology of candidates?

A. This is primarily because psychology is vast. The HR fraternity has been employing psychologists who are specifically trained to understand the psychometric results of a candidate and understand his or her psychology.

Q. What challenges do you generally face in finding people who fit in the organisational culture?

A. We have been recognised as one of the most respectable employers in the industry, yet we have faced challenges in finding people who fit in our culture. It is because of the speed at which the organisations are run, dynamic decision-making ability and extremely competitive environment.

Q. What are the recruitment and selection processes followed at Reliance?

A. Certain tools that we use are:

1. Software technical tests. 2. Aptitude/logical reasoning tests. 3. Group discussions and behavioural event interviews.
