MURUGAVEL JANAKIRAMAN FOUNDER AND CEO, MATRIMONY.COM PVT. LTD.
The Match Maker
Murugavel Janakiraman (Founder and CEO, Matrimony.com pvt. ltd.) on how he made online match making possible
Issue Date - 01/03/2013

Q. In 1997, Internet was a luxury in India. What was the idea behind launching BharatMatrimony.com?

A. In the year 1997, I wanted to begin a community website with a Tamilian feel. Initially, the idea was to have different things related to the community like Tamil calendar, recipes, matrimony, discussion forums and much more. Hence, I launched a community website. Later, I found out that matrimony was driving the maximum traffic. It is then that I thought of going ahead with a separate matrimonial website, which later took the form of BharatMatrimony.

Q. What were the initial challenges that you had faced while setting up BharatMatrimony and why did you relocate to India from America?

A. I started my business in 1997 and it took me two-and-a-half years to launch a separate matrimonial website in 2000. Initially, it was pretty challenging as it was a one-man show and I was catering to the Indian market sitting in the United States. A business can only work when you start from the grass-roots level. So, I relocated to India in 2004 with an idea to create the most trustworthy, credible and safest online matrimonial website in the country.

Q. What was your game plan to position BharatMatrimony in the market?

A. At first, people did not seem assured with the idea of online matchmaking. Posting pictures online and meeting people for marriage concerns was not in fashion then. So, we thought of innovating the security aspect of the digital medium. We introduced a feature called ‘photo password’, a first-of-its-kind, which enabled people to upload their photos and secure them with a unique password. Another landmark feature was incorporated in the website, which allowed users to restrict visits to their profiles.

Q. How do you see social media as a communication tool?

A. These have turned the world into a global village. To make judicious use of these websites, we have tied up with LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, and integrated them with our services and have succeeded in attracting more users.

Q. What plans do you have for BharatMatrimony in the coming times?

A. We are expanding from matchmaking to marriage-related services. Through our recent portal matrimonydirectory.com, we provide all wedding-related services with a wedding Craigslist that helps our audience find immediate solutions in busy times. We will continue to grow in the coming times with our untiring efforts and engaging innovations.
