No Doubt About It: AppLabs Is Serious About HR
Discover the interesting HR systems, activities and innovations that helped the global IT services company, AppLabs grab the Certificate of Excellence at the Smart Workplace Awards 2008
 
applabs, incorporated in 2001, is a global independent software testing, quality management and certification solutions company. AppLabs has become a trusted partner to more than 600 companies, providing both quality assurance and third-party validation. One of the key factors propelling the growth of the company has been the unique work practices followed across the organisation, and this is reflected in the company tagline of ‘no doubt about it’. These practices are aimed at promoting and encouraging a friendly, enthusiastic and energetic learning environment that contributes to the development of each member of the AppLabs team.

Providing visibility to career growth is becoming very important for organisations today. AppLabs has put together ‘Definitive Career Tracks’ for employees and has introduced the concept of ‘Individual Development Plans’ (IDPs), in order to set quarterly milestones for employees from a holistic development perspective. The IDPs provide controls to employees with guidance from their managers through a broad framework. The company has been able to provide employees with opportunities for cross-functional and fast track moves which ensure their progress on the learning curve. AppLabs has also tied up with institutes like Indian School of Business (ISB) to provide learning to leaders.

Understanding that it is critical for employees to identify with the company they work for, AppLabs has endeavoured to bring in numerous internal branding initiatives that enable employees to connect with the service offerings and align their mindsets with the organisational goals and objectives. The internal communication tool ‘Coffee With The CEO’ allows select middle- and senior-level associates to interact with the CEO informally over a cup of coffee. The core objective of this programme is to provide an open forum for employees to meet the CEO face-to-face and learn about the company’s performance. They get a chance to voice their opinions, concerns and suggestions.

Applabs has recently launched a Fitness Club, which has over 400 registered members. They organise group fitness activities like walking, running and hiking alongwith aerobics classes held at the gymnasium. The aerobics workouts, in fact, became so popular that the company has now started only-for-women classes with Reema Sarin as the instructor. This programme is more popularly known as the ‘Bollyfit Programme’, keeping in mind the demand for learning steps from Bollywood movies.

 
AFlixation is the movie club at AppLabs dedicated to the serious film enthusiasts at the company. The club members, known as ‘Movie Buffs @ AppLabs’, organise movie screenings for the 2nd and 4th Fridays of every month. AFlixation aims at recognising quality filmmaking while increasing employee bonding. The ownership of this initiative rests with the HR team.

At AppLabs, CSR stands for Citizens’ Social Responsibility, and the employees take this very seriously. AppLabs’ CSR initiatives are carried out under the umbrella of the AppLabs Charitable Trust (ACT), with a special focus on providing healthcare and education opportunities to the poor and needy communities. Through the commitment of over 2000 employees globally, ACT has made a significant impact towards the social causes that it supports.

ClickOmania, the photography contest organised at AppLabs, provided ‘clickomaniacs’ a platform to showcase their ‘picxallence’. The company also organised a creative painting contest called ‘Crayona’ for employees’ children. The event received 75 registrations and was later replicated at the American offices. AppLabs celebrates the company’s annual day through the event called ‘Aakruthi’, wherein every delivery group is assigned a budgets towards offsite gatherings. Interestingly, AppLabs was included in the ‘Global Services 100’ 2009 list, brought out by Global Services.
